Schools are environments that require special attention in terms of hygiene because of high occupancy and the still-developing immune systems of children. A well-planned cleaning calendar can significantly reduce illness-related absences.
The autumn period (September-November) is a time of intense contact as the school year begins. Classroom door handles, stair railings, restroom areas and canteens should be cleaned at least twice a day with a broad-spectrum surface disinfectant. In the winter months (December-February), keeping hand hygiene stations stocked takes priority because of flu season; placing a foam hand soap dispenser at the entrance of every classroom is critical during this period.
A deep-cleaning program should be put into practice in spring (March-May): carpet cleaning, maintenance of ceiling fans and air conditioning filters, and periodic disinfection of the gym floor. During the summer break, paint, door seals and floor coverings are maintained; at least two days before the school reopens, all areas should be given a final pass with an aerosol-free disinfectant.
